"WHERE THE RUBBER MEETS THE ROAD, AND IN THIS CASE, THE RUBBER ON YOUR BOOTS!

The good buggars at Gun City recently hooked me up with a pair of hunting/ tramping boots made by a brand some of you might be familiar with, Alpina.

Yep, Alpina, one of the leading brands in ski boots. Which, as I quickly found out, have tapped into their years of experience and developed a whole range of outdoor footwear from sport shoes to mountaineering boots.

Although I’m no skier, or snowboarder, I was aware of the Alpina brand and their ski boot manufacturing pedigree. From that, I had some expectation that these would be a quality product. And out of the box, they immediately looked to be the goods.

Like most kiwi hunters, I’ve been through many footwear types, starting off with the ol’ John Bulls, to the Skellerup Bullers and Ashley’s before finally ending up in full leather boots. Once you adopt a proper leather boot, you seldom go back.

The primary reasons for this is comfort, fit, and insulation. A leather outer and Gore Tex (or similar) means layers, and layering means insulation and ultimately warmth, phew!

The Alpina Nepal obviously has these construction qualities so I was in no doubt that they’d be up to the task for the type of hunting I generally do; sub-alpine through to lowland bush and scrub. In short, ideal for sika (and most other) hunting in New Zealand.

To kick things off, I wore the Alpina Nepals on this sika hunt into the Kaimanawas with pleasing performance. These were straight out of the box with no breaking in period,

A more in-depth review will feature at a later date once I’ve spent some more time on the hill in them.

A year on and I have worn the boots plenty and can perform a follow-up review. The boots have performed extremely well!"
